Consultation Services

Our psychiatric consultation services provide a comprehensive evaluation of your mental health by carefully reviewing your symptoms, medical history, and other relevant factors.  During the 1-hour consultation, James assesses psychological, biological, and social causes of emotional distress to gain a full understanding of your condition. This thorough evaluation involves an in-depth interview and review of past treatment and medical records to identify patterns and formulate the best strategies for your care.  The result is a treatment plan tailored to optimize your mental well-being.  The plan may include therapy, medication, or other interventions depending on your unique needs.  Our approach ensures that you receive expert care aimed at improving your quality of life and supporting your mental health journey.

Medication Management

Psychiatric medication management for prospective clients typically involves a comprehensive process starting with an initial evaluation by James to understand each client’s symptoms, medical history, and mental health status.  This leads to an accurate diagnosis which informs a personalized treatment plan that may include medication. James discusses potential medication, benefits, side effects, and proper usage, emphasizing education and collaborative decision-making.

Medication management involves prescribing the appropriate medication at the lowest effective dose to avoid unnecessary polypharmacy and monitoring the effects closely through regular follow-ups.  During these follow-ups, James assesses the medication’s effectiveness, side effects, and makes necessary adjustments to dosage or medication type. The process is tailored to each client’s unique needs, focusing on gradual improvements in conjunction with healthy lifestyle changes.

Clients are encouraged to actively participate, report side effects, and communicate their experiences to optimize treatment outcomes. The goal is to use medication alongside other therapies when beneficial, with ongoing education to address concerns such as medication dependence or misconceptions.  This approach ensures safe, effective, and personalized psychiatric care, helping clients manage conditions such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, ADHD, substance abuse and others while maintaining their overall well-being.

Therapeutic Support

James provides therapeutic support across various life stages by tailoring interventions to age-appropriate developmental, emotional, and social needs, ensuring care is effective and relevant to his client’s stage of life.  Across all ages, therapy is designed to be client-centered, culturally sensitive, and adaptable over time.  James creates a safe, respectful space with open communication, adjusting treatment plans to individual preferences and life circumstances.  Please see the section entitled “Non-Pharmacological Approaches” for specific definitions of the types of therapy James provides.

For children, therapy often focuses on play-based techniques and family involvement to address issues like separation anxiety and behavioral problems, creating a safe and engaging way for children to express themselves and develop coping skills.

For teens, therapy targets identify development, emotional regulation, and peer relationship management using cognitive tools like mindfulness, thought records, and social skills training, addressing challenges like mood swings and peer pressure.

For adults, therapeutic support is customized to handle life stressors such as work-life balance, relationships, parenting, and midlife transitions. Approaches may include cognitive-behavioral therapy, stress management, counseling, and medication management when necessary.

For older adults, therapy recognizes challenges like grief, loneliness, cognitive decline, and physical health concerns.  Interventions may include grief counseling, life review therapy, reminiscence therapy, and collaboration with outside specialists.

With all stages of life, lifestyle recommendations, such as exercise, sleep hygiene, and nutrition can compliment therapy to improve emotional and cognitive well-being.  Approaches used may include cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and family interventions, matching the type and intensity of support to the developmental and situational needs at each stage of life.  As with every intervention suggested, James ensures his techniques fit each client’s goals and promotes resilience and mental health across the lifespan.

Non-Pharmacological Approaches

James tailors a number of interventions based on an individual client’s needs, preferences and diagnosis to provide a holistic care plan focused on symptom improvement and overall wellness.  Non-pharmacological methods compliment and can sometimes be an alternative to medication, aiming for sustainable mental health improvements and relapse prevention.

Solution Focused Therapy, also known as Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, is a collaborative, short-term approach that helps clients identify an apply their strengths and resources to achieve specific, meaningful goals.  Rather than focusing on analyzing the origins of problems or exploring past issues, Solution Focused Therapy emphasizes building solutions and envisioning a preferred future.  James helps his clients formulate clear goals and define what positive change would look like in their life. Therapy centers on what the client wants to achieve, rather than what brought them to therapy.  James helps his clients recognize their personal strengths, past successes, and resources that can be drawn upon for change. Clients are encouraged to identify small, concrete steps toward their future goals.

Goal-oriented therapy begins with a clear identification of specific, meaningful goals a client hopes to achieve. This method is not a single type of therapy but an overarching strategy, often found in cognitive and behavioral therapies, designed to keep treatment focused and purposeful. Using this strategy, James works collaboratively to help his clients set concrete objectives which shape the overall treatment plan. A structured, purposeful approach is used where progress is regularly measured against these goals. Clients are empowered by being involved in the decision-making process, increasing their motivation, self-efficacy, and ownership of recovery. Goal-setting targets practical skills (like assertiveness or coping strategies) and broader changes (such as reduction in anxiety and improving quality of life.)  Revisiting, refining, and celebrating progress toward a client’s goals throughout therapy makes treatment more relevant and meaningful to each client.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is structured talk therapy that helps patients identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors, effective for depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other disorders.  It improves mood, coping skills, and resilience.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy builds on CBT but focuses on acceptance and emotional regulation skills, especially useful for borderline personality disorder and emotional dysregulation.

Mindfulness-Based Therapies such as mindfulness-based stress reduction and meditation, promote awareness and stress reduction to improve mental well-being.

Other psychotherapies may include acceptance and commitment therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing for trauma, and interpersonal therapy.

Lifestyle and complimentary approaches may include recommendations to begin yoga, acupuncture, biofeedback, music therapy, dietary, sleep hygiene and reduction in the intake of alcohol and other elicit substances.
